In the tracer gas test, tracer gas is introduced into the structures either from one side of the structure or through drilled injection holes. The tracer gas used is a nitrogen-hydrogen mixture containing 95% nitrogen and 5% hydrogen. The meter detects the hydrogen escaping from leak points, and nitrogen is used only to dilute the hydrogen concentration, thereby eliminating any risk of ignition or explosion.<\/p>\n<p>The area to be tested is typically depressurized to a negative pressure of 10\u201315 pascals using a leak detection system (pressure door) or other means. Separate compartmentalization is not necessary, as we are able to depressurize even large buildings all at once if needed. Leakage points are classified according to the guidelines as point, minor, and significant air leaks. Findings are photographed and marked on floor plans, making them easy to repair based on the report.<\/p>\n<h3>Steps in a tracer test<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Negative pressure in the room (10\u201315 Pa)<\/li>\n<li>Supply of tracer gas to structures<\/li>\n<li>Inspection of structures using an analyzer<\/li>\n<li>Photographing observations and annotating base maps<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"su-spoiler su-spoiler-style-default su-spoiler-icon-plus service_spoiler su-spoiler-closed\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\" data-anchor-in-url=\"no\"><div class=\"su-spoiler-title\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><span class=\"su-spoiler-icon\"><\/span>Applications<\/div><div class=\"su-spoiler-content su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n<p>The most common application for tracer tests is a space or building where indoor air quality issues have been detected. Microorganisms, radon, dust, and other contaminants can enter the indoor air through air leaks in the building envelope. In some cases, old structures can be sealed and encapsulated instead of being replaced. Sealing repairs are usually significantly less expensive than replacing the structures.<\/p>\n<p>Air tightness testing using tracer gas tests is most commonly performed before sealing repairs to ensure that the repairs are targeted correctly. As a quality assurance measure, tracer gas tests are often conducted again after the repairs are completed. In most cases, the area being inspected is the subfloor and its joints, as radon and microbes rise from the ground. Wall structures or the ceiling can also be inspected.<\/p>\n<p>If there are a significant number of leaks, it may be advisable to first perform a leak test and thermal imaging under negative pressure, which will identify the largest leaks much more quickly and cost-effectively. A tracer gas test can also be challenging to perform if the structure is highly leaky, as the tracer gas will spread into the space being measured in large quantities, interfering with the measurement. In such cases, the largest leak points should be sealed, for example, temporarily for the purpose of measurement.
