We have mainly published blog posts About Vertia's Work Culture<\/a> as well as the various measurements and surveys we provide to our clients. In this post, my aim was to shed some light on the process we use to schedule these measurements. One of the tasks of our organizational team is to maintain regular contact with site coordinators, and the goal is to ensure that our surveyors are on-site at the right time to avoid unnecessary delays in the construction schedule or other unpleasant surprises. In practice, it is impossible to predict when water damage will occur, but most of our measurements are required either by construction regulations or the requirements of the contract documents, meaning their necessity is known well in advance.<\/p>\n

For a construction site, it makes a significant difference what time the quality control inspector is on site.<\/h2>\n

An airtightness test for a single-family home can certainly be conducted after moving in and before the final inspection, and the airtightness rating can still be updated on the energy certificate. However, in this case, the air leakage paths identified during the test are already hidden behind the panelling, and the test does not help in achieving the best possible airtightness for the building. On the other hand, if a concrete moisture meter is brought to an apartment building construction site for the first time a week before the planned installation of flooring materials, unexpectedly high moisture levels can delay the project or result in a costly and labor-intensive \u201cscramble\u201d when a large amount of drying equipment must be rented for the site. Once again, a moisture meter on-site early enough could have provided valuable information that would have allowed the site to avoid delays or extra costs with just a few minor corrective actions. One could even say that part of the quality of surveying lies in its timely execution, which Vertia actively strives to ensure.<\/p>\n

We aim to receive information as early as possible about the locations where we will be conducting measurements.<\/h2>\n

We obtain information about the construction schedules for our contract clients\u2019 sites through their extranet systems or by otherwise maintaining contact with the construction site during the early stages of the project, and we also strive to conduct sales proactively. When we receive information or a direct order for a project to be measured through these channels, we add it to our own system, where we schedule the next contact with the project\u2019s contact person. We review these contacts continuously, and there are usually about 100\u2013150 of them per week. At best, a measurement time can be agreed upon during the first phone call, but often we inquire about the schedules of work phases preceding the measurements or answer questions the customer may have, such as the weather conditions required for thermal imaging or the drying of concrete, and we schedule a new call depending on the situation, for example, a week or a few months down the line. Sometimes we also chat on a more general level about the project\u2019s workload or, say, a funny situation that happened on-site. The projects that have been in our system the longest have been under construction for over five years. We often send schedule inquiries via email as well if it is likely that the contact person does not have immediate knowledge of the progress of the work phases. We also send, if necessary checklists<\/a>, which allow customers to assess the schedule themselves or ask us for further details.<\/p>\n

Quality assurance in measurements is about more than just getting the mandatory red tape out of the way.<\/h2>\n

In single-family home projects, it is common for us to perform (typically airtightness and\/or moisture) measurements during a single visit, after which the project proceeds to the next phases. In larger projects, such as apartment buildings or nursing homes, however, it is standard practice that, in particular, moisture measurements<\/a> continue for months as construction progresses. In such cases, communication regarding follow-up visits is primarily between the on-site surveyor and the construction site, but assistance is also provided through the organizational team as needed for urgent requests or to cover for sick leave. Tightness measurements for large projects often include an inspection visit conducted approximately 1\u20132 weeks before the actual measurement, as the surveyor\u2019s observations allow for many adjustments to be made even before the actual measurement, thereby preventing unnecessary return visits. With this approach, construction sites usually understand that quality assurance in measurements is about more than just getting mandatory bureaucracy out of the way, and the measurement doesn\u2019t stick in their minds as an annoying disruption. And of course, it\u2019s also more pleasant for the surveyor to arrive at the site when things aren\u2019t in a last-minute rush and the guidelines for carrying out the work are clear.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
