Locating pipes with a thermal imaging camera

It is easy to locate water-based underfloor heating pipes using a thermal imaging camera. The warm pipes are visible on the camera screen through the concrete and floor covering. This usually requires a little preparation, although in some cases the pipes can be located without any prior preparation.

Preparatory work

  1. Turn off the floor heating or set it to a low setting approximately 24 hours before the scan
  2. When filming begins, the floor heating is turned on, making the pipes visible to the thermal camera

If no preliminary preparations are made, the temperature of the concrete slab may be so uniform that the pipes are not visible to the camera. For this reason, we always recommend making preliminary preparations to ensure the best possible results.
