Vertia, a Finnish company specializing in ensuring housing quality, makes the results of its airtightness tests available to everyone as an open service.
The statistics in the Vertia Kanta service already include results from approximately 12,000 new buildings surveyed by the company, with new entries added daily. In addition to the measured air leakage figures, the service provides information on the exact locations and magnitude of the leaks detected.
The Vertia Kanta service is located at https://kanta.vertia.fi/
- "We believe that real, measured data will help the construction industry and researchers focus on the right issues. This will improve the airtightness of new buildings as well as the quality of construction," says Topi Jokinen, CEO of Vertia.
Air tightness testing helps reduce the risk of moisture damage, ensure controlled ventilation, and improve energy efficiency. Building air tightness thus offers significant benefits to construction companies, prefabricated home manufacturers, homebuilders, and renovation contractors. An airtightness test conducted at the right stage reveals leaks that can often be repaired during the test itself. This leads to a better end result.
Jokinen explains that Vertia has been conducting airtightness measurements nationwide since 2012, and the published database contains results from the last five years. Overall, there has been a positive trend in the air leakage rates of buildings. By performing more detailed searches in the service, you can find interesting differences, for example, in terms of building types or leakage locations.
- The free Vertia Kanta service is a comprehensive platform that requires only a login to use. We also offer a more detailed version of it for use by our customers, researchers, and educational institutions. In addition, we are currently producing a report titled “The State of Density in Finland” based on the database, he says.
In addition to airtightness testing, Jokinen says that Vertia collects measurement data on, among other things, concrete drying. Drying time is extremely important when striving to shorten construction lead times without compromising on quality. Other measurements, such as thermal and sewer imaging, are also planned to be added to the database in the near future. He believes it is possible that data from these measurements will also be shared for open use in the future to help develop the entire industry.
