Onboarding should take into account the person as a whole

Modern construction is a highly complex field where everything affects everything else. A thorough and careful grounding in building physics and construction technology is required to understand, for example, the phenomena caused by pressure differentials and moisture in building structures. However, a surveyor is not just an expert who guides and supports the construction site to ensure the project’s success, but also a human being. This should also be taken into account during training.

As a company grows, onboarding becomes a crucial part of transferring knowledge from experienced experts to new hires. My own onboarding philosophy is that I don’t just tell people to do things a certain way; instead, I encourage them to use their own “common sense.” I always explain why something is done and what it’s related to. Things are done and physical phenomena occur for a reason, and it’s not worth memorizing them by heart—it’s better to understand them.

Onboarding works best when both parties are open-minded and understanding of one another. That’s why I always start by emphasizing that it’s a good idea to question things and ask lots of questions. Often, there’s a reason behind how certain procedures and things are done. Sometimes, though, a fresh pair of eyes can spot the silly ones practices that we’ve simply gotten used to doing, but for which there may be a better way.

What I'm trying to say here is that Just like a modern building, a person is also a multifaceted whole. As human beings, we are all different; we value and perceive things in different ways. We take everyone into account as individuals, and things work out when everyone is assigned tasks that match their unique characteristics. Life is a whole, and if a workplace can take this into account, we’re on the verge of something wonderful.
