Moisture measurement methods

Moisture surveys are generally conducted using a surface moisture meter. Below are all the methods we can use to investigate moisture in building structures, if necessary.

Surface moisture measurement

Surface moisture measurement is a method in which a moisture sensor is placed directly on the surface of the material. It involves measuring moisture differences between various points at intervals of 20–50 cm. The method is quick and non-destructive, and is used to identify potential moisture damage. However, it does not provide definitive results, and if you want to verify the actual moisture content of the structure, additional measurement methods are required.

Borehole and core sample measurement

Borehole and core sample testing involves taking a sample from the material or conducting measurements through a borehole. These methods allow moisture to be measured from within the material and are more accurate, but they also damage the structure. These methods can be used, for example, to reliably determine the moisture content of concrete at a specific location.

Cut measurement

The slit test is a method in which a measurement is taken by making a slit or a thin cut in the surface of the material. The moisture content is then measured directly through the incision. This method is useful when you want to determine the moisture content directly beneath a surface covering. It is particularly suitable for determining moisture content beneath carpets.

Wood spike measurement

The pin-type moisture meter is a method used to measure the moisture content of wood, in which the pins of the moisture meter are inserted directly into the wood. This method provides a direct reading of the wood's moisture content and is commonly used in the inspection of wooden structures.

Wool Measurement

Fiber moisture measurement is a method specifically developed for measuring the moisture content of mineral wool and insulation materials. This method uses special sensors capable of measuring moisture from within the wool or insulation material, providing accurate information about the material’s moisture status.
